What is Grief?

Grief is a normal and natural response to a loss.

According to the website speakinggrief.org that I discovered recently (and wish I had known about much, much sooner), grief is a set of experiences that involves the perceived loss a person has related to a loved one, situation, event... anything that changes the way that person responds physically, emotionally, and spiritually to the world around them.

Loss, and therefore grief, is an inevitable part of life that unfortunately, many of us don't understand until we're already in it.

Grief can be present during any time of change, and we grieve for many reasons other than death. Sometimes, we find that we are grieving for more than one loss at the same time. Each person's grief is unique, and our individual grief experiences are shaped by many factors.

Grief is not a problem that needs to be fixed. Grief can only be "carried."
